It’s not the first time I’ve heard of The Provincial. I can’t tell you where I first heard it though. Maybe Twitter. I hear about lots of things through twitter.

Twitter’s started a lot of things. A lot of the so called food fest tends to originate from twitter. #duckfest being the most famous one, subsequently we got #crabfest and #porkfest. Will there be #fishfest, #chickenfest, #vegefest? I wouldn’t mind a #vegefest….

But I’m getting off track here. The reason I went by The Provincial was because of #porkfest. I do think people in this country don’t embrace this meat enough. It is absolutely beautiful to eat and the flavours are amazing but not many seem to realise it’s beauty. Steaks and lamb chops all the time can get boring! I should know. I live in the country where that’s what they eat 99% of the time. Ahem.

I don’t really remember, but I think this was Pink Vodka? Whatever it was, it was yummy and there was way too little of it. Boo. I finished it off way too quickly and wish I had more. Not a smart idea so I didn’t get more. Not without a great deal of reluctance tho.

There was the usual bread and olive oil to start off with. I didn’t touch them because I was trying to save room for the main event. But after having read Agnes’ review I kinda wish I did now. They sound yummy!

Starter: Mustard stuff and fried pigtails, housemade black pudding, carrot puree and crushed peas

This was a beauty. I loved every bit of this dish, though I really should have taken notes because whatever the wait staff told us on that night regarding the dish is well and truly gone. I guess the most important part was that it was a beauty. Brilliant way to start the night.

Entree: Parsley crumbed pork loin, apple puree, salt baked beetroot salad and cider sauce

You see that crackling? You see how beautiful it is? Now why isn’t there more of it? Because I so could have eaten way more of that crackling. Agnes talked about having to guard her crackling and ward off greedy fingers. Yup. That would be Ihua and my fingers. As it is, we were totally undressing that crackling with our eyes. Wait, it’s already naked. Naked and yummy in all its crackling glory.

Main: Wood Roasted pork shoulder, olive crushed potato, pickled pear & rocket salad and salsa verde

So it was with great delight that we welcomed the next dish. Oye, crackling!! Unfortunately, this was where the dishes took a turn. Instead of the beautiful tender and juicy porky heaven I was looking forward to, the pork shoulder was dry. I didn’t finish my piece because it was dry. It made me shed a tear because it looked so good too. The pickled pear on the other hand, I love. The crackling? Can’t fault it.

Dessert: Bitter sweet chocolate tart, pistachio salt caramel and vanilla ice cream

Again, I so wanted to love this. The Pistachio Salt Caramel and Vanilla ice cream, I loved. The Bitter sweet chocolate tart? Beautiful the first few bites but the richness very quickly settled in and I struggled to finish it. It was very very nice but quite a tad richer than what I could handle. Pity, I hate wasting food.

All in all, it was a beautiful evening. While I may not have loved every single bit of the dishes, I think the overall was still a very convincing ‘awesome’. The atmosphere, the skill and technique in every dish… I’ve missed it. This dinner happened on the very first monday I was back for the holidays, so I was a bit tentative going for a food bloggers dinner. Would things be different? It’s been a few months since and I felt like I was out of the loop. But 5 minutes into it and I was right at home. Everyone was friendly. Everyone was amazing and welcoming. And I remembered once more why I love hanging out with the food bloggers.

The Provincial Hotel / Cafe Provincial on Urbanspoon

Review: Old Kingdom, Fitzroy.

I’m actually in Malaysia / Singapore right now as you read this. Back here in this region to visit my parents and my relatives. Mainly because after this trip, I have no idea when I’ll be able to visit my parents again. I’ll be blogging about the foods here shortly, but there’s still a pile of backlog of Melbourne posts to go through first. I’ll also continue posting as usual, so you don’t have to worry about waking up one day and not seeing a new post from me!

You see that photo there? That’s a whole duck. One whole fat duck that was brought out to our table during the bloggers night out at Old Kingdom. You know what that means? It means it’s peking duck night. Oh hallelujah.

Organized by the fabulous @eatnik who managed to gather 26 of foodies for a night of pinot and peking duck. We ordered nothing but peking duck. So that came up to 13 ducks. That’s a whole lot of duck.

I have to say, the duck skins here are interesting. They came sliced with meat. While I enjoyed the texture of the meat with the skin, it was also sticking out like a sore thumb in the “not authentic” section of my head.

I gave up trying to make sure my rolls were pretty. Threw being a perfectionist to the wind and concentrated on being a foodie. @cloudcontrol’s brilliant idea of asking for chopped chilli gave the peking duck skin rolls that extra kick. A much needed kick given that it was a cold night. Of course, wine does help with that too.

And when you have 26 hungry diners craving peking duck, it doesn’t take long to go from this:

to this:

It’s gone, it’s gone!

There is something amazing about having plates upon plates upon plates of peking duck skin delivered to your table. And there is also something to be said about watching so many people gathering together to enjoy the pure goodness of peking duck. Amazing, that’s what it is.

Noodles and soup followed but to be honest, they were kinda not very exciting. The exciting part of the evening were the peking duck skins. They were definitely nice, but not amazingly nice. I’d go back again tho. At that price ($30 per person I think it was), would I go back? Hell yeah.

Thanks to @eatnik for this amazing #duckfest! I know that #duckfest2 is happening soon, and I’m gutted that I won’t be there for QuanJude, but I guess there will be #duckfest3 to look forward to!

Hope all is well in Melbourne land, and I cannot wait to show you what I got today. Here’s a clue : heaps and heaps of cookbooks!

Hidden Pizza – A Melbourne Foodie Mystery

I love a good mystery, better yet if it involves food.

Twitter ran ablaze with the hash tag #hiddenpizza today and it piqued my curiosity. As it turned out, the buzz was created by this: Hidden Pizza. If you don’t like spoilers and want to hunt down this place yourself, this is where you get off the boat. Bye.

If you look into it, there’s some talk about it being a marketing scheme by Yellow Pages, and there are others who don’t seem all that into the idea or concept of the whole thing. And so on and so forth, and to be honest, I don’t really care. Is there food? That’s all I’m concerned about. Call me a pig, but at least I know where my priorities lie.

Here’s the deal: Find the restaurant and you’ll get a free pizza. The catch is, you can’t just rock up and order one. You have to find the restaurant the way they want you to (which is the yellow pages), give them a call (on a 1300 number) and place your order before heading over to the restaurant.

They will then text you the location of the restaurant, along with your code number (which is really your mobile number) and a whereis link to locate them. If you squint, you might be able to make out the location of the pizza joint. On that note, photos today are a record breaking bad. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Lighting was absolutely horrid but it really helped the atmosphere. Just didn’t make for good photography.

So I called, placed my order and drove over to Fitzroy. The pizza joint opens at 5.30pm (though the lines actually opened before then as I was able to place my order before 5.30pm) and I got there at 6.30pm only to be greeted by the nice long queue as shown above. One of the guys who worked there said that on Day 1, they had 240 orders ring through on the first hour itself. Pizza hut, eat your heart out.

The queue moved fairly quickly and as you get to the front, you will find yourself staring at the first of many video cameras. They get you to sign a release form that basically says yes, you are okay with them uploading your video to their website, youtube and where ever else it decides to go in the internet. Fairly standard stuff. Considering this pizza joint will be open for a full two weeks, that’s two weeks worth of videos. Really, I don’t think my 2 seconds of fame on that camera is going to matter all that much.

Once all the paperwork is out of the way, they show you where the actual pizzeria is: downstairs ; underground. The handsome lad who manned the door informed me that no photography was allowed downstairs, and to be honest with that crap lighting, you’d need to be a genius like Abstract Gourmet to get any decent photos. Or just don’t be a camera dork like me.

I really liked the underground decor, and it was made even more impressive by the fact that it was all made from recycled materials. Although I have to admit that my favourite was the plywood garbage bins. I’d use that over our standard plastic garbage bins any day. It was around the 20 minute mark before our pizzas got to us, but the time passed quickly in between marvelling at the wall of yellow pages, watching Tony Fazio at work baking pizzas, and being impressed by the video of the entire building process of the little underground pizza joint.

And so we sat down on the little seats with cushions covered in recycled billboard skins with our pizzas and home made lemonade in a jar. And this is where I attempted to take some really bad photos.

What you get: pizza in recycled paper bag.

Hot Salami

Capricciosa

Each pizza is about 10 inch in diameter, and is a single serve pizza. Because I had my housemate with me, I had the opportunity to try two different pizzas tonight. And surprisingly, I really liked both! Admittedly, I found the leg ham on the Capricciosa way too salty and it threw the taste balance of the pizza off somewhat. But it was definitely tasty and flavourful. But come on, it’s a Tony Fazio pizza. Can’t go wrong with that.

The lemonade came in little jars with the recipe printed on a label. I liked it so much I took it home. Were we allowed to take it home? I don’t know, the guys didn’t stop me so it must be okay.

Sadly, it seems that this joint is going to pack up and disappear in a puff of smoke after the 2 week period is over. So if you are in the area (or even if you aren’t! Go on, make the drive!), put the call in and get yourself some free pizza and lemonade.

Only open from April 12 – April 25. Get moving or risk losing out.
And if you want everything on a silver spoon, here’s the yellow page listing to Hidden Pizzas.
