In December last year, my parents came for a visit and I decided that no visit to Melbourne was complete without a winery tour. Short one or otherwise.

It was a hard toss up. Go to one I haven’t been before, or to one I knew and believe to be good so my parents were impressed? In the end, the urge to try a new place won out and it was to Oakridge Wines that we went for lunch one fine afternoon.

I often find it hard to write a lot about winery lunches. It’s always so peaceful, so serene. Wine glass in hand, beautiful sceneries as far as the eye can see…

It often makes me feel that in attempting to describe the experience, I am marring the experience by an excessiveness of words. It almost seems as though that the old saying: A picture is worth a thousand words is incredibly appropriate for these visits.

But of course, there’s always the question: was the food good?

Unfortunately, I don’t think so. It was pleasant enough, but it wasn’t mind blowingly good. Alas, my parents weren’t impressed either and I don’t think I managed to convince them just why I love wine region touring so much.

I do have to say though, that dainty looking rhubarb dessert was so incredibly sour I couldn’t eat it. Ah well.

There are greener pastures out there, I’d say. Try again, another day!

  2. We had lunch here when we came to the Yarra. We were in the less expensive section though. I thought my dish I had was rather bland, but my boyfriend’s was pretty good. The scenery is beautiful though.

  3. Great photos, pity the food wasn’t as impressive. Oakridge is a great location. Next time you should try lunch at Tokar Estate – it’d the only winery restaurant I am aware of that is full almost every day of the week. Testimant, I suppose. so book. Alternatively, for a lighter style, try the Red Shed further up Maddens Lane for more cafe style – they do great brekky, cakes and coffee.

  4. Awww.. that’s a pity that the parents didn’t enjoy it… you took beautiful pictures tho!!! The last time I had super sour rhubarb in dessert in a winery place.. was at Yering Station!!!

  5. aww really! sucks that the food wasnt impressive! i tried montalto recently in yarra valley…food was good but not that memorable too!

    We ate there and Tokar in one weekend, Tokar stuck back in the 70′s with flavour and presentation, Oakridge miles ahead for value, presenations, flavours and service, superb. Unless you add a huge amount of sugar rubarb is sour by nature….PS Montalto is in mornington
